Although a major fire destroyed the masterpiece of Gothic architecture in April 2019, it is impossible not to mention the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral. It is the universal symbole of Paris and France. Beyond its religious vocation, Notre-Dame is one of the jewels of national and world cultural heritage.

On the Seine, Notre-Dame was built on the Ile de la Cité, which is considered the ancient cradle of the city of Paris.
The design of this cathedral is the wil of a man : the bishop of Paris, Maurice de Sully, and its construction began in 1163. It lasted more than two centuries. After the French Revolution, the architect Viollet-le-Duc undertok a torough restoration, which was essential for a building that had deteriorated considerably over time. The work lasted 20 years.
Viollet-le-Duc ' s very personel interpretation of medieval art, with the creation of the great spire and the chimeras, were the object of sharp criticism. However, his tenacyty gave medieval architecture a certain notoriete.
Upon entering the building, visitors are strick by the brightness of the building and its impressive space.
The interior architecture of the cathedral is build on three levels, lit by large stained glass windows. A double ambulatory runs around the nave. The Gothic style is charaterised by its ribbed vault.

With nearly 14 million visitors per year, it is the most visited monument in France and Europe.
