    Hypothetical sentences: tenses


     Sequence of Tenses :

     

    1) If + present simple -> future simple

    Example: If you make a presentation, you will have a good mark.

     

    2) If + past simple -> conditional simple (would + infinitive)

    Example: If you told me, I would help.

     

    3) If + past perfect -> past  conditional

    Example: If she had learnt her lessons, she wouldn't have failed  her exam.

     

    MODAL EQUIVALENTS: can, may and must

     

    * Can -> to be able to

    Example: If I succeed in my exam, I will be able to go abroad.

     

    * May -> to be allowed to

    Example: If you work hard, you will be allowed to go to the party.

     

    * Must -> to have to

    Example: If you get married  to this girl, you will have to be tolerant.
